PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Academic Coaching Private Practice, San Francisco and Sonoma Counties, California Provide in-home test preparation, reading comprehension instruction, manuscript editing and tutorial services across the curriculum to individual clients from first grade through graduate school.

Airway Community School, Sonoma County Office of Education, Santa Rosa, California Taught junior high age boys and girls who had been expelled from their school districts for issues ranging from gang and drug activity to fighting, making threats and habitual truancy. Daily contact with parents to provide liaison with community police, drug and alcohol counseling, and other community support services.

DeForest Hamilton School, Los Guilucos Juvenile Detention Center, Santa Rosa, California Taught adjudicated junior high and high school age males in a self-contained classroom within a juvenile detention facility. Administered the WRAT and participated in IEP meetings. Coauthored two articles on teaching strategies used successfully with this population during this period.

Special Education Department, Rio Grande High School, Albuquerque, New Mexico Taught social studies and language arts to high school students with learning problems and other disabilities in a public high school with a 70% Limited English Proficient population. Administered the Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT) and wrote Individual Education Plans (IEPs); chaired IEP meetings. Coauthored article on the application of self-efficacy theory to management practices in the workplace as well as in the classroom.

Hogares, Inc., Albuquerque, New Mexico Taught severely emotionally- and behavior-disordered students, grades six through twelve in a non-profit mental health facility for adjudicated adolescents. Administered the Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT) and wrote Individual Education Plans (IEPs); participated in IEP meetings. Served on the grant writing and curriculum committees.

Department of Special Education & Rehabilitative Services, San Jose State University, California Participated in the design and execution of a research project using the Reciprocal Teaching Method to improve the critical thinking and reading comprehension skills of Vietnamese refugee Limited English Proficient students.

Designed and taught a course based on Bandura’s self-efficacy theory to enable Vietnamese teaching credential candidates to transition their existing personal and academic skills to the American academic context.

Taught a graduate course on bilingual/bicultural students with special needs.

SRI, Inc. (formerly Stanford Research Institute), Menlo Park, California Participated in the research team which visited selected California school districts for the study “Evaluation of Alternative Strategies for Serving Students With Learning Problems” mandated by the Legislative Analyst’s Office in Sacramento, California.

Department of Special Education, San Francisco State University, California Taught a graduate course, Diversity in Special Education: Family, Culture and Community, to teachers pursuing special education credentials. Focused on identifying strategies to facilitate communication between school personnel, community service providers, and families with children with special needs. Emphasis on family of origin issues, culturally appropriate communication methods and productive referral and follow practices.

Taught and coordinated relevant guest speakers for a large introductory lecture course, Education of Exceptional Children, for graduate students in elementary and secondary education credential programs.

Supervised, observed and advised student teachers in their field placements in the Learning Handicapped Credential Program.

Departments of Education, Sonoma and Marin Counties, California Substituted in kindergarten, elementary and secondary grades, regular and special education.

SCORE, Student Affirmative Action, San Francisco State University, California Taught oral and written communication skills and critical reading comprehension strategies to 6th, 7th and 8th graders in an enrichment program for students of color.

Meiji College of Oriental Medicine, San Francisco, California Educational consultant to a Japanese acupuncture college; designed culturally appropriate instructional strategies and administrative procedures for the American setting.

Allums Assessment & Learning Center, 242 Marina Way, Richmond, California Administered psychoeducational batteries including the Structure of Intellect Test to adults and preschool children; conducted remedial educational workshops for participants in the Contra Costa Black Chamber of Commerce Job Training Program.

Special Services Project, Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park, California As a Learning Skills Specialist worked with students with learning problems and various disabilities and with students from diverse socio-economic and linguistic backgrounds in the areas of writing, study skills and time management. Responsible for liaison with Office for Students With Disabilities. Consulted with professors in various disciplines to improve service delivery to their students with disabilities. Administered and evaluated the Woodcock-Johnson Psychoeducational Battery and Structure of Intellect Test. Provided supplemental instruction sessions for general education science courses. Participated in grant writing for the project.

Administered a program employing student tutors for all campus disciplines; responsible for budget, recruitment, training and supervision of tutors and liaison with university departments to determine service needs.

Performed tests for Hepatitis B on donor blood using electrophoresis and radioimmunoassay. Performed microtitration analysis of Hepatitis B antibody in known positive blood samples. Kept records and compiled statistics for a long-term hepatitis research study.

Self-efficacy The application of self-efficacy and self-monitoring training to students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds as well as to students with learning problems to enable them to become efficient learners. Application of self-efficacy theory to team and cooperative activities in the workplace.

Reading Instruction Effective approaches to teaching reading comprehension strategies to cultural and linguistic minority students, second language learners and those with learning problems; the application to various populations, including mature learners, of Palincsar and Brown’s “Reciprocal Teaching of Comprehension-monitoring Activities.”

Hypnotherapy Therapeutic use of ordinary speech; the power of positive suggestions presented in everyday language. Applications of hypnotherapeutic techniques in the classroom and the workplace. The mind-body connection and the use of language in healing and pain management.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Investigation of the mind-body connection acknowledged by traditional Chinese medical theory; the study of holistic treatment of students with learning problems through traditional healing methods.
